Big Kids (ages 5 & 6)

 Questions about Big Kids

Is this a Mommy and Me Music class or a drop off?

Music Together® encourages you  to drop off your child and return for the last ten minutes of class (with other siblings if you need) to enjoy cozy time in the lullaby and Goodbye song with us.

Big Kids Family Music® Program Ages 5 and 6 only ( Wednesday Pleasanton and Saturday Livermore only)

“Big Kids Family Music®” is a new curriculum and 60-minute class geared to the interests and social nature of children ages 5 and 6. (To attend the Bid Kids Family Music class, your child must be 5 years of age by the start of the semester you wish to attend.) Although this is a DROP-OFF class, families still play an important role in this class joining their enrolled child for the last 5minutes of the hour long class. Younger or older siblings may also join this last 15 minutes to preserve a family atmosphere for the enrolled child. For the enrolled child, game songs, folk dances, jam sessions, dramatic play, and more structured work in rhythm and tonality will be included. Orff metallaphones and Glockenspiels will be used by the children. The class will use the current semester song collection and additional materials. Learn how to support your child musically as he or she develops interests and skills in singing, playing instruments, taking dramatic roles, creating, and dancing. The last 5 minutes of the hour long class, in which parents/caregivers and siblings of ANY AGE may attend, will contain the Lullaby, Goodbye and general announcements.

How is Big Kids Family Music different from regular Music Together classes?
All children will be in the 5-6 year age range as opposed to our mixed age classes. The parent will not attend with the child though may join for the last 5 minutes of the lesson  for the lullaby and goodbye song
ORFF instruments will be used such as the metallaphone and Xylophone. Formal instruments such as the guitar, native American flute and various drums will be demonstrated and explained by the teacher. Rounds and holding ostinato pitches will be encouraged. There will be individual singing opportunities for each child if desired in the classes. However, the Music Together play-based philosophies with elements of fun, and informal experimentation in singing and movement will be maintained. Sol fege syllables ( Doh, Re Mi) will be covered and also rhythmic solfege. Home "play" pages offered each week for completion at home.

"This is such a rich curriculum, I wish I could have had this education at that age"! -Music Together Tri-Valley Director, Rowena Morgan

(While this will not be a dance class as such it will be a fabulous foundation or accompaniment to a dance class as it can instill a sense of rhythm and phrasing into the body- vital for any success in dancing or playing an instrument)
